Toughen yourself for CDS examination

A country is defended as much by its brain power as by the fire power it has at its command. It is only appropriate therefore that the Combined Defence Service examination, scheduled for February 12, tests candidates as much for their proficiency in General Knowledge, Math and English as for their psychological prowess and physical fitness.
With less than two months left the exam, this is the time you should spend working on as many sample papers as you can.
Candidates should focus more English and Math," says a coach at Lt-Col Deol's Minerva Academy, Mohali, who didn't wish to be identified. "They should also be up-to-date on current events and the world around them."
He urges candidates to read English-language newspapers and magazines to improve their general knowledge and vocabu-lary as well. But don't stress yourself don't read up on topics that you haven't touched yet; focus on the ground you have covered.
The candidates who clear the qualifying tests will face a series of psychological and endurance tests spread across four days. The examination, conducted by the Services Selection Board (SSB), tests a candidate's intelligence, personality and trainability.
It is wonderful method of screening. The SSB makes a comprehensive assessment of every aspect of a candidate's personality," says the coach from Minerva Academy. The Chandigarh coaching centre offers a day intensive programme put together by a team of academics and retired army officers who know the nitty- gritty of the SSB selections.
The assessment of a candidate's psychological prowess is an important (and interesting) part of the examination process, so no preparation is complete without candidates learning, through repeated practice, how to respond to challenging situations.
At Cavalier India, a training academy for students aspiring to join the defence forces, candidates are taught to assess and respond to various combat situations shown to them on LCD screens. "Looking at the images, the candidates have to relate them to their environment or to the political situation in the country and explain it acordingly," says Brigadier (Retd) M. S. Ruhil, Director and Head (North Zone), Cavalier India.
"The idea behind the psychological tests is to map the emotions experienced by candidates, including fear, as well as assess their leadership skills, decision-making ability and aptitude," explains the retired brigadier. "The way the candidates describe the images they see on the screen provides the examiners insights into these facets of their personality."
The CDS examination is held for admission to the elite Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun, Indian Naval Academy (INA) at Ezhimala (Kerala), the Air Force Academy (AFA) in Hyderabad, and the Officers' Training Academy (OTA) in Chennai, which is the only institution that admits women.
