GROUP DISCUSSION
AT SSB
(Tips and Techniques)
During your SSB INTERVIEW PROCEDURE, you have to face GD for (atleast) three times:
a. During PP & DT (Screening Test day 1)
b. Group Discussion (GTO day 1)
c. During GPE (GTO day 1)
Here we mainly discuss for GTO's GROUP DISCUSSION. (Where as the tips are applicable for all kind of GD, even for MBA entrance!)
GENERAL
1. First task in gto series. Part of exploration phase.
2. Sets the pace for gto series-importance of first impressions.
3. Immediately after initial briefing by the gto.
4. Each topic discussed for 15- 20 minutes.
METHOD
Discussions on two topics
A. First topic.
· Choice of two subjects given by the gto.
· Group to interact & decide on the topic.
B. Second topic.
· Given by the gto
METHODOLOGY
· An informal discussion – not a debate
· Each candidate can frequently take part
· Speak any number of times.
· May speak for or against
· No chairman- no conclusions required.
WHAT IS OBSERVED
· Communication skills.
· Logic in reasoning or general/superficial knowledge.
· Are the ideas copied or based on sound personal experience.
· Are ideas practical / realistic and commensurate with candidate’s age & maturity
· Critical / optimistic of environment/ events.
HOW TO ENTER THE DISCUSSION
· Beginning
· Midway
· By Arising Questions like How?/ Why?
HOW TO STRUCTURE THE DISCUSSION
· Define the subject
· Analyse the subject
· Give points for / against.
METHOD TO GENERATE LOGIC /POINTS

L-Legal/ Logical
T-Technology
WHAT TO DO
- Listen to the subject carefully
- Collect your thoughts systematically
- Initiate the discussion if you know the subject well
- Listen to others if you don’t know the subject
- Support you point with some facts and figures
- Make short contribution of 25-30 seconds 3-4 times
- Give others a chance to speak
- Speak politely and pleasantly. Respect contribution from other members.
- Disagree politely and agree with what is right.
- Summarize the discussion if the group has not reached a conclusion.
WHAT NOT TO DO
- Initiate the discussion if you do not have sufficient knowledge about the given topic.
- Over speak, intervene and snatch other’s chance to speak.
- Argue and shout during the GD
- Look at the evaluators or a particular group member
- Talk irrelevant things and distract the discussion
- Pose negative body gestures like touching the nose, leaning back on the chair, knocking the table with a pen etc.
- Mention erratic statistics.
- Display low self-confidence with shaky voice and trembling hands.
- Try to dominate the discussion
- Put others in an embarrassing situation by asking them to speak if they don’t want.
